I am sure many of you Soul Spacklers are well-versed in Tarot and are probably already familiar with Joanna Powell Colbert's Gaian Tarot deck. As for myself, I’ve only ever dabbled in Tarot, never quite making it a regular practice. I was, however, familiar with the Major Arcana of the Gaian Tarot from the online oracle. So I had already found myself drawn to the earthy warmth of this deck. Joanna has generously gifted me with a deck to be given away to a lucky Soul Spackle reader. Please see details at the end of this post to find out how to enter.

My resistance to the Tarot probably goes back to my mother’s own religious superstitions, and as such, despite owning a deck or two and reading the books that went along with them,Tarot remained an esoteric and darkly mysterious thing to me for quite some time. No matter that my whole life I have been attracted to symbology and mythology and the Jungian concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious, which is precisely what Tarot uses to tap into your internal guidance while bypassing the logical mind. Still my mother’s superstition held sway.

I’ve had some gorgeous decks -- the art used in any oracle is very important to me -- that actually managed to frighten me when I tried to use them. Always I seemed to be in some oddly fearful frame of mind when I would pull cards, and in response I got rather negative readings. It was a bit of a self-fulfulling prophecy for me, and I set my decks aside, preferring friends to do readings for me, since they always came from a much more grounded place.

The beauty of the Gaian Tarot is that, from the first time you lay eyes on it, it is a grounding experience. This is not to say you should not do an actual grounding process before using it, but I found the warmth in the artwork and the apparent love for Mother Nature that comes through in the deck to be a healing balm that erased my fears.

The cards themselves are wonders: it is clear that Joanna’s love has been poured into them during her painstaking hand-coloring of each image. And that is after the time and care and thought as to what symbols to include. The book provides lists of corresponding symbols for each card such as animals, moon phases, time of day, flowers and goddesses to help you deepen your connection to the message of each card. There are also journal questions. I simply have never had an easier time understanding the meaning behind each card and my practice has deepened. I have a much better grasp of tarot and a deeper trust in my own intuitive abilities from working with the deck daily, pulling a card or three -- after grounding myself!

After having worked with it for a while as a relative beginner, I think the Gaian is a wonderful introduction. The changes made to follow the Gaian theme honor the traditional structure: The Minor Arcana are divided into the elemental suits of Air, Fire, Water, Earth. I find these easier to relate to and understand than the traditional suits of Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, even though the correspondences are the same. The traditional hierarchy of the court cards is replaced by stage of life cards: Children, Explorers, Guardians, Elders. Again, the correspondences are easy to relate to when we see that we are part of Nature, just as the elements are. We all follow the rhythms of the seasons and the cycles of the moon, whether we are consciously aware of this or not. The symbology of Mother Gaia is, quite simply, in our blood and breath.

This is why I also appreciate that there is no “toning down” of the cards considered to be more negative in the Gaian Tarot; the shadow aspects are honored and respected. In any moon cycle, there is the dark moon. In any life cycle, there is Death.

I would recommend this deck and book to anyone who loves Nature and has an interest in Tarot, and that it is why I am so excited to be able to give one of these decks away!

I was fortunate enough to see Joanna speak about her Gaian tarot deck at our Tarot meet-up in Durham, NC at the first of the year. I really love her beautiful vision and interpretation of the tarot arcana. I couldn't buy them then and would love to have one of the Llewellyn decks!

I love this deck! I also would love to gift it to a friend. As you say, it'sa sweet, positive deck, w/ ignoring the shadows, AND gives tips for overcoming them! I drew a card Sunday before heading to a hot springs for a day trip with 2 friends, & pulled 3 of Water! 3 otters playing in the water, perfect! I took the deck along & we each drew a "perfect " card later as well!

Oh my goodness, Sarah, I cannot believe I stumbled upon this from Goddess Leonie's site for the Blog Tribe pages. I'm so happy that I did. Thank you for posting this giveaway and about this deck.

I have been attracted to it for a while now and have not purchased it for myself because I've been busy purchasing things for my son these days for school and we've been saving for a down payment on a home. I am so excited to have a chance to win the deck!

I am attracted to this deck because it makes me feel comforted. It brings me a feeling of warmth, calm, connection and freedom that I do not get from any other deck that I've seen. I love the colors, the images, the artful story each one tells and the music each image seems to sing.

Thank you for the opportunity to enter this contest. Good luck to everyone!

Brightest Blessings,
Bird @ http://birdsearthyspirit.blogspot.com/

Sara, thank you for sharing your perspective on this wonderful deck. I too have had the experience of showing it to people who have been afraid of tarot and it has changed their view as well. That is one of the great beauties of Joanna's work, her inclusiveness and sensitivity to the natural world, which anyone can relate to, no matter what their spiritual path may be. Nice to find your blog too.

Sara

Thanks for the great review. What I love most about this deck is how the vibrant Nature aspect draws you right into the cards. I always judge a deck by how easily I feel it would be to step through into the cards and have a conversation or sit on the grass. With these cards I feel I could slip through the veil so very easily.

I didn't find out about the Gaian deck until the online version, either, and I've loved it ever since. I'm not usually drawn to earthy, grounding artwork in tarot, but there's something uplifting and shining about this deck that draws me to it. I'm working on learning more about tarot and finding my "right" deck right now, and this one has been speaking to me for a while. It would be lovely to bring it home to meet my Motherpeace deck!

Le Entry!

I'd love to get to know Joanna's Gaian Tarot because of the Sun card on the cover - it's full of love and joy and beauty and sunshine.

The gaian tarot feels like a down to earth and practical tarot deck that incorperates men as well as women into it's imagery in a more equal manner than modern RW decks, which totally puts me off and is why I opted for a Goddess deck to learn tarot with. I think it might be time for me to start working with male imagery in Tarot.

Also, I heard there are otters in it.

I have long been desiring a deck that I can truly relate to. As of right now I have two tarot decks and neither of them draw me in or communicate to me very clearly.
This deck sounds so beautiful, I love that it is so grounded in Mama earth. I would love to win this deck and explore its powerful, light-filled guidance.

What a beautiful deck! I had not come across this one before. (I'm a bit of a Tarot obsessive, and used to have six or seven packs.) I love the mix of photo(-realistic?) images and more illustrative artwork.

What you say about needing the right deck for you, especially when getting started, is spot on.

What a great contest! I'm not entering it myself only because I'm in love with my current tarot deck (Light and Shadow)-- but I'm certainly gonna share news of this far and wide. ;)
